SA boy, 4, in hospital with meningococcal B strain disease

A YOUNG boy is the latest victim to contract meningococcal in South Australia.

SA Health says a case of invasive meningococcal B strain has been identified in the boy, 4, from metropolitan Adelaide.

The boy is in hospital in a serious condition.

SA Health has identified several people who had contact with the boy and they are being directed to take clearance antibiotics.

Winter and spring are commonly a higher risk time for meningococcal disease.

It is spread by close or lengthy contact and SA Health says there is no increased public health risk.

It is the 15th case of invasive meningococcal in SA this year, compared with 13 last year.

Nine of these have been B strain, four have been W strain and two have been Y strain.
