4 year old SA boy struck with Men B

A young boy has been rushed to hospital after being diagnosed with invasive meningococcal.

The four-year-old boy from metropolitan Adelaide is in a stable condition while SA Health has prescribed precautionary clearance antibiotics to multiple people who came into contact with the child.

SA Health has identified the meningococcal as B-strain.

This most recent case in the ninth so far this year compared to 11 at the same time in 2019.

Of the nine cases so far this year, six were B-strain, two W-strain and one Y-group.

In 2018, there were 34 cases of meningococcal reported in South Australia.

Of those 27 were B-strain, four were W-strain and three were Y-strain.
