21 year old SA woman battling meningococcal

A case of invasive meningococcal disease has been notified in a 21-year-old woman from metropolitan Adelaide, who is in a stable condition in hospital.

The strain has not yet been identified.

SA Health has identified multiple people who had contact with the patient, and four people have been directed to receive clearance antibiotics.

Meningococcal health information has been distributed to contacts in accordance with theĀ Invasive Meningococcal Disease Communicable Diseases Network Australia: National Guidelines for Public Health Units.

There have been four confirmed cases of invasive meningococcal disease reported in South Australia to date this year, compared to six cases recorded at the same time last year.

Of the four cases, two have been serogroup B, one serogroup W and one yet to be identified.

No links have been established between this case and other recent cases.

A total of 34 cases were reported in 2018; 27 were serogroup B, four were serogroup W and three were serogroup Y.
