18-month-old South Australian boy in hospital with meningococcal B

An 18-month-old boy is in a stable condition in hospital with meningococcal infection as SA Health officials work with a child care centre to ensure the health and safety of other children.

SA Health has identified multiple people who had contact with the child and 28 are receiving antibiotics as a precaution.

Health officials are working with staff at the Kesters Road Child Care Centre at Para Hills to ensure all children and parents who may have had contact with the patient receive appropriate care and advice.

The strain has been identified at B.

There have been 31 cases of meningococcal infection in South Australia so far this year, compared to 35 cases at the same time last year.

No connection has been established between the latest case and any previous cases.

Of the 31, 25 have been the B strain, four the W strain and two the Y strain.

A total of 36 cases were reported last year — 22 of the B strain, 11 of the W strain and three of the Y strain.
