Student Helps Spread the Word

The following letter was received by Meningitis Centre Chairman, Bruce Langoulant in August 2002 in response to the ongoing meningococcal awareness campaign.

"I have a special interest in this topic because I suffered from meningococcal disease in June/July 2001, when I was 16. I am glad that your organisation has been increasing the awareness of meningococcal disease through television, newspapers, doctors, schools etc because it will reduce the number of fatalities that occur when people don't get to hospital in time to be treated.

I am very lucky because I got to the hospital in time and made a full recovery with no serious consequences. I have my doctor to thank for recongnising my symptoms to be those of meningococcal disease, and telling me to go straight to hospital because it saved my life.

I would like people who suffer from meningococcal to be able to identify the signs and symptoms, so that they can get to hospital in time, and can live to tell the tale like I've been able to do. After reading your article in the Southern Gazette on July 9 2002, about increasing public awareness on meningitis, I was sorry to find out that your daughter suffers from cerebral palsy and deafness as a result of meningitis. I would like to offer you and your daughter my deepest sympathy and wish you luck in the future.

I wish you luck in the Meningits Awareness Campaign."
