About The Meningitis Centre

The Meningitis Centre is an Australian not-for-profit organisation based in Perth, Western Australia. It was established in 1992 by a group of parents and health care professionals who recognised the need to raise public awareness of meningitis and it's various forms. At the time very few people were aware of the signs and symptoms of meningitis, the possible tragic side effects and with no effective vaccine program in place, the community needed to be educated about the disease. Early detection and prompt medical attention was the key to successful diagnosis and outcomes.

Despite seeing a reduction in the incidence rate, Meningitis remains a disease all parents fear. It can cause death or lasting disabilities.

The Meningitis Centre continues to strive to eliminate meningitis in Australia. It has successfully lobbied for vaccines and and produced materials for educating the community across Australia to be aware of the signs and symptoms. It also provides support for families affected by the disease. With Meningitis every second counts.

Based at the world-renowned Telethon Institute for Child Health Research in Subiaco Western Australia, The Meningitis Centre works closely with the Institute and the WA Health Department.

The fight against Meningitis has also gone global. In 2004 the Confederation of Meningitis Organisations (CoMO) held its inaugural conference in the United Kingdom (UK) bringing together 20 meningitis and child health organisations from 14 different countries to take on the fight against meningitis at a global scale. The Meningitis Centre attended the conference and has been an active member organisation of CoMO ever since.
