The Meningitis Centre is a not-for-profit, national organisation established more than a decade ago by a group of parents and health care professionals in WA.
These people recognised the need to raise public awareness of meningitis and its many forms throughout the nation, because while meningitis is a disease all parents fear, few knew much about its tragic side effects.
Importantly, The Meningitis Centre realised that parents had to be able to recognise the symptoms of meningitis and what action to take.
In the absence of an effective vaccine program for ALL forms of meningitis, early detection and prompt medical attention is still the key to successful outcomes.
As the impact of meningitis can be significant, The Meningitis Centre has seen the need to establish support networks for those families whose lives have been affected by the disease.
Since 1992, The Meningitis Centre has helped millions of Australians develop a better understanding of meningitis.
The increasing number of ‘good news’ stories appearing regularly in the media indicates that in many cases tragic outcomes are being avoided by those who contract the disease.
This has come about because more parents and carers now recognise early the tell-tale signs of meningitis, often because they’ve seen the symptoms publicised during awareness campaigns organised by the Centre.
But the task of eliminating the risk of meningitis is far from over.
The Centre works closely with the world-renowned Telethon Institute for Child Health Research and the WA Health Department to maintain public awareness of meningitis.
In this regard, the Centre’s achievements include:
infants after January 2005.
ses to ensure vaccines are being effective.
The Meningitis Centre is a national network of parent volunteers supported by a Coordinator, CEO and Family Support Services Officer.
The Centre’s board of management includes several senior public health officers, a medical doctor, prominent businessmen and parents whose children have been affected by various forms of meningitis.
The Centre is based at the world-renowned Telethon Institute for Child Health Research in Perth, which provides an office, telephone lines, accounting services and relevant medical, research and statistical information. The Institute, under the directorship of Professor Fiona Stanley, played a major role in helping establish the Centre.
The Meningitis Centre also works closely with Government health departments in the production and dissemination of information pamphlets, fridge magnets, brochures and awareness campaigns.
T
he Meningitis Centre is committed to improving awareness of meningitis and septicaemia, signs and symptoms and vaccine information. Part of this awareness strategy includes working with various community groups.
The Centre continues to build its relationship with healthcare workers, hospital staff and clinicians and promotes services it can offer to families affected by meningitis and or septicaemia.
The Centre conducts regular information presentations for childcare centres, community groups, businesses, hospital staff and community-based health care practitioners.
It also exhibits information at fetes, gala days, school health information days and pharmacies.
If you are interested in hosting a presentation or would like to stage an exhibit, please contact the Centre at Meningitis Centre
